The Origins of Diamond Doves

Diamond doves also known as Geopelia Cuneata comes from the Columbidae family of birds that includes pigeons and doves. Diamond doves come from Australia and are one of the smallest dove species you can find out there. They are commonly found in dry areas near water, also thriving in open woodlands and grasslands. Diamond Doves can often be spotted on the ground in groups trying to feed mostly on seeds and ants. 

Behavior and Temperament

Diamond doves are very docile as they don’t attack you and very delicate due to their size. They are social birds, so keeping another bird is very ideal as that can improve their mood and behavior. Diamond doves are also peaceful with their own kind making them ideal pets. They are very endearing with humans, being curious and quite accustomed even to gentle touch.

Characteristics

Diamond doves color is mostly gray but has white spots on their wings which is why they get the name diamond doves. They have red eyes that have a bright orange ring around them. They are also very small measuring from 9 to 11 inches long.

Males and females doves are similar in appearance except the male has a slightly brighter and bigger orange ring near their eye compared to the female, which is good if you are trying to pair a male and a female dove. 

Diamond doves also have multiple color mutations, some of these are silver, white and pied diamond doves. These mutations are caused by selective breeding and add a variety to diamond doves.

Communication and Vocalization

Unlike parrots, Diamond doves don’t really scream and make too much noise which is why they are good for someone who wants quiet birds. However they do communicate through a variety of vocalizations with different meanings. Firstly their soft, gentle cooing is one of many sounds they make and is very relaxing to listen to but also relates to courtship and bonding with other mates. The males also produce a repetitive cooing to attract females diamond doves usually for mating. 

Diet and Nutrition

A good diet is one of the most important things that you should consider to keep a healthy bird. Diamond doves mostly eat seeds so  high-quality seed mixes are fantastic. 

Fresh vegetables should also be considered, as an all-seed diet can lead to health problems. Vegetables also give them the necessary nutrients. 

Occasionally adding grit to their high-quality seed mixes can be helpful. Grit allows them to digest food better but never give too much.

Health and Environment

Health problems are often a major concern for our feathered friends. Diamond doves commonly face health issues such as respiratory problems, mites, and nutrient deficiencies. A healthy diamond dove shows several signs like bright eyes, smooth and clean feathers, active behavior, and a strong appetite. Regular check-ups with an avian veterinarian are also good. 

Diamond doves usually live for 10 to 14 years with some reaching up to 20 years with good care. Which is why it is important to learn about them to ensure a better future for them.

Habitat and Housing

Creating a living space for diamond doves is crucial as it can provide happiness which is good for their overall health. Diamond doves thrive in settings that mirror the conditions of the wild. This means a room large enough for flying, perches, branches and nesting areas that provides resting and breeding spaces which are essential for their well being. 

It’s best to have solid flooring in their cages instead of bars so that they can comfortably walk around. They don’t hang on cage bars like parrots and prefer to sit in the nest or on branches. 

Training and Taming

While diamond doves are very peaceful they can also be tamed with enough time. Best way to strengthen your bond is to spend time with your bird and give treats while gently handling them. Once you feel that the bird is starting to trust you and doesn’t feel afraid of you, try simple commands like encouraging them to perch on a finger or your hand.
